{"id":1574,"date":"2023-06-30T11:46:41","date_gmt":"2023-06-30T17:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/?p=1574"},"modified":"2025-05-20T07:40:00","modified_gmt":"2025-05-20T13:40:00","slug":"restore-safari-tabs-and-windows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/?p=1574","title":{"rendered":"Restore Safari Tabs and Windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I posted about this earlier and had it happen again: I foolishly had 4 Safari windows with a zillion tabs open, updated macOS Ventura to 13.4.1 and Safari 16.5.1, patched with Opencore Legacy Patcher, and when I reopened Safari I noticed all my windows and tabs were gone. No sweat I had a Time Machine backup.<\/p>\n<p>1. Click on your desktop, press Command Shift G, and paste this file path:<\/p>\n<p>~\/Library\/Containers\/com.apple.Safari\/Data\/Library\/Safari<br \/>\nor (updated 3-27-2025)<br \/>\n~\/Library\/Containers\/Safari\/Data\/Library\/Safari<\/p>\n<p>2. Go up to the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and choose &#8220;Browse Time Machine Backups&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>3. Click the up arrow to go back in time for the Safari window, I chose the previous night just before I had initiated the Ventura system upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>4. Hold down the Command key and select\/tap on each of the files highlighted below, then click the &#8220;Restore&#8221; button. Here&#8217;s a list of the files as shown in the screenshot:<\/p>\n<p>CloudTabs.db<br \/>\nCloudTabs.db-shm<br \/>\nCloudTabs.db-wal<br \/>\nSafariTabs.db<br \/>\nSafariTabs.db-shm<br \/>\nSafariTabs.db-wal<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1936\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/?attachment_id=1936\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1936\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1936\" class=\"wp-image-1936 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Restore-Safari-Windows-and-Tabs-300x167.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Restore-Safari-Windows-and-Tabs-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Restore-Safari-Windows-and-Tabs-1024x572.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Restore-Safari-Windows-and-Tabs-768x429.png 768w, https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Restore-Safari-Windows-and-Tabs-500x279.png 500w, https:\/\/www.schwie.com\/brad\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Restore-Safari-Windows-and-Tabs.png 1032w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Files to recover when restoring your tabs from a backup.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>5. Quit Safari and when you&#8217;re prompted choose to Overwrite the existing files.<\/p>\n<p>6. After the copying is complete, launch Safari and from the menu bar choose History-&gt;Reopen All Windows from Last Session.<\/p>\n<p>Boom, your windows from the previous session should now be restore. I&#8217;m leaving my previous post up just in case Apple fiddles with Safari&#8217;s structure in the future. Also note, following these instructions does not erase your history, even information between the tabs you&#8217;re recovering the current time &#8211; this history remains.<\/p>\n<p>* Sorry for the lack of a screenshot, I have it, but WordPress is giving me some fits.
